Smiley face Sigma Plastronics

Sigma Plastronics, a division of IsleChem, is the formulator and global supplier of NO. 1 VARY FLEX EPOXY, TYPE HV, a two-part epoxy resin system used by microwave connector manufacturers worldwide to captivate the center conductor in SMA and other connectors. NO. 1 VARY FLEX EPOXY, TYPE HV, is also used as a general-purpose potting, encapsulating, and staking material in microwave devices.

NO. 1 VARY FLEX EPOXY, TYPE HV, was developed over thirty years ago for use in SMA resin-capture designs. Formulators from Sigma Plastronics worked to generate the ideal resin characteristics for this application. Since that time, the resin-capture technique and the use of NO. 1 VARY FLEX EPOXY, TYPE HV, have spread globally throughout the industry.

NO. 1 VARY FLEX EPOXY, TYPE HV, features:

  • Low dielectric constant 2.5 - 2.8 (Precise value varies based on processing and cure.)
  • Negligible outgassing. Total Mass Loss 0.29%, total Collected Volatile Condensable Materials 0.01% (2.5/1.0 mix ratio by weight, 72 hour @ 25C air cure; http://outgassing.nasa.gov)
  • No VOCs
  • Minimum hazard to handlers. Though all epoxy systems should be handled with care, the VARY FLEX system is among the least hazardous. It is not a hazardous material per DOT and IATA.
  • Design flexibility. NO. 1 VARY FLEX EPOXY, TYPE HV, is also used as a general-purpose potting, encapsulating, and staking material in microwave devices. Variations in mix ratio affect the cured hardness of the material (thus the name "Vary Flex").

NO. 1 VARY FLEX EPOXY, TYPE HV, is comprised of two parts:

  • NO. 1 VARY FLEX EPOXY RESIN, TYPE HV, is royal blue in color, supplied in pint or quart cans.
  • NO. 1 VARY FLEX HARDENER, TYPE HV, is amber in color, supplied in pint or quart cans.
  • The two materials are sold separately rather than as a kit allowing each customer to use their preferred mix ratios. For connector applications, a typical ratio would be 2 parts resin to 1 part hardener by volume (2.5 to 1 by weight).
